Day 36: I am Pro-Life

I’m not afraid to say it. I truly and honestly believe that every single person on this earth has a right to live. I believe that no one should take that away from them. I believe that every person should be in complete control of their own body. I believe that government has no right to tell me what to do with my body. I believe that if you are pregnant, the three main choices that are available to you are adoption, parenthood, and abortion. I believe that you should choose what’s right for you and your situation.

Adoption is sometimes a wonderful option, but it doesn’t work for people who don’t want to be pregnant. Pregnancy is very hard on you physically, financially, and mentally. A lot of people can’t or don’t want to go through that. There are people who take all the precautions, they do what you’re “supposed” to do, but still end up pregnant. There never has been and never will be a good reason for forcing someone through a pregnancy and childbirth they do not want.

Abortion isn’t genocide, murder, or killing a baby. It’s simply ending a pregnancy. Birth control, condoms, and emergency contraception definitely aren’t “killing babies” because they simply prevent pregnancies from happening. We need to stop tolerating and spreading this dangerous misinformation. It’s actively harming people and causing them to force themselves through pregnancy and/or parenthood they don’t want.

A fertilized egg is not a person and a fetus is not a baby. I value the life of the pregnant person over the potential life of the fetus. It’s the living, breathing, feeling, loving people who already inhabit this earth that we should be helping. Those are the people we should be passing laws to protect.

I am pro-life because I’m pro-choice.

This is another piece I initially wrote for tumblr, but I thought I’d bring it over here and slightly modify it. I love how the title and beginning throw people completely off-balance.

  1. Here’s something people don’t seem to understand about being pro-choice: it doesn’t mean we’re pro-abortion.
We have this concept in society that we call bodily autonomy, which means that we all get to do with our bodies, and we value this concept a lot – that’s why we think it’s wrong take a life (without permission, at least), to kidnap someone, to rape someone, to hurt someone physically – because physical distress can cause great emotional distress. We can’t even take someone’s organs for medical purposes after they’re dead if they didn’t give us permission while they were alive. So, why should this concept apply to anything else but pregnancy? We’re not killing a baby, we’re extracting a few cells. Sure, these cells could have been a whole new life, but so could the sperm you threw in the garbage inside a condom last night. Are you a cruel person for doing that? No, of course not, because they’re just cells, they don’t have a nervous system, they don’t feel anything. But the person who is unwillingly pregnant does feel physically and emotional distress. And you don’t even have to know that to realise that YOU CAN’T FORCE SOMEONE TO DO SOMETHING WITH THEY’RE BODIES THAT THEY DON’T WANT TO, so if we have ways to terminate a pregnancy, why wouldn’t we?
No one has to agree with abortion. Pro-lifers are not trying to force everyone to get abortions. The only thing we’re asking that everyone respects a woman’s right to choose what to do with their own bodies.
