Day 85: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child — Part One (Spoilers)

So I’m done with Part One. This is fanfic. I know people have said it over and over, but they’re right. It’s complete and utter, queerbaiting fanfic. This is like wannabe slash, time travel au, crackfic that’s too afraid to have Albus and Scorpius say “I like you” or (god forbid) “I love you”.

JK does her usual thing of having these obviously queer characters develop crushes on girls that seemingly come out of nowhere. Like, ok, let’s give her the benefit of the doubt and say that both Albus and Scorpius are bi. Maybe they like girls too. That’s understandable, but for Scorpius to develop a crush on a girl who obviously hates him and who he has little to no contact with and Albus to develop one on a woman who just pops up in his house one day seems unlikely. These very forced crushes are extremely underdeveloped and nowhere near believable at this point.

Another thing that bothers me is the supremely overdramatic personalities of Harry, Albus, and Draco. It’s like she copied Emo Harry’s personality from Order of the Phoenix and pasted it on adult Harry, Albus, and adult Draco. At one point she has Draco mocking Harry by, and I kid you not, mimicking his voice. They’re in their late 30’s to early 40’s at that point. They’re way too old for that. I can understand Albus being slightly overdramatic and sullen, that’s part of being a teenager. Harry, on the other hand, has no excuse.

She also made Harry into a super controlling father. After some time travel shenanigans go down, Harry is convinced that Scorpius is a bad influence on Albus. So, he does the totally sensible thing of threatening both his own child and Minerva McGonagall. He tells Minerva to use the Marauder’s Map to keep an eye on Albus and Scorpius. If they’re ever in the same place she’s supposed to separate them immediately. He arranged it so that they no longer had classes together, and demanded Albus stay in the common room whenever he wasn’t in class.

Essentially, Harry wanted control over every aspect of Albus’ life. That was one hell of a thing to see. I understand a parent being concerned if another child is a bad influence on their kid. I’m a parent too. I get that. What I don’t get and find inexcusable is threatening your child and demanding control over their every movement because of your fear. That is not acceptable. For JK to have that in there is troubling to say the least. I’m sure she’ll later have Harry redeem himself in some heroic fashion like she usually does, but it’s disconcerting that was in there to begin with.

I’m only done with part one so there’s a lot left to read. So far though, this is in the definite crackfic category. Since I refuse to accept the epilogue as canon, this is nothing but professional fanfic to me and has no bearing on my enjoyment of the original series. This is just a peek into the mind of a creator who really should’ve stopped while she was ahead.
