Day 115: Miscommunication

Sometimes it feels like people misinterpret the sentence “what I go through is different that what you go through because _____” as “I have it worse than you because _____.” That’s where a lot of the privilege conversations go wrong. People get immediately defensive when a person they believe is better off than them is insinuating that they have a rougher time than they do. This is why you see a lot of “but I’m poor, how does [insert rich Black person here] have it worse than me” stuff from white people.

No one is saying a rich Black person has it “worse than” a poor white person. We’re saying that they experience the world differently because of race. There are things a white person, rich or poor, will never experience but a Black person will. Until that miscommunication gets cleared up, conversations on privilege will go nowhere.
