For PoC, racism is not all we think about. Yes, it can be at times a major part of our lives, but we don’t spend 24 hours a day thinking about it.
We don’t intentionally seek out racist things, they just sort of land in our laps.
We also don’t spend every moment of everyday thinking about white people and what they’re doing or saying.
When you come to a PoC’s blog and you see lots of posts about racism, it’s not because it’s at the forefront of our minds. This is our semi-safe space. This is our sanctuary. This is the place were we can vent about the micro-aggressions of the day/week/month/year. This is where we get a chance to speak with other PoC and compare and contrast our stories and experiences. This is where we can offer love, help, and support to those who need it and get those same things back when we need it.
So, when you come to a PoC’s blog and you see many posts about injustice or oppression, keep in mind that we aren’t “dwelling” on the issue or “seeing a problem where there isn’t one.” What we’re doing is simply venting, thinking, and saying the things that we can’t say offline.
That is also a major reason why you may not receive a warm welcome when you jump into our conversations or invade our inboxes with long diatribes about your feelings and how we should be “nicer” and “more accommodating.” We get that type of thing all the time offline, so we definitely don’t want to and don’t need to hear it online.
