Day 132: A note to white feminists.

If you are a white woman and you want to call yourself a feminist, you must acknowledge that your whiteness affords you a privilege that shields you from a lot. You must also acknowledge that you are afforded privileges that some men in this country do not have. Racism and sexism are tightly intertwined. You cannot fight one while ignoring the other.

Another thing White Feminists™ shouldn’t do is like/share this post and think that fills your intersectionality quota for the day/month/year. I hate to burst your little bubble but shit ain’t that simple. Also, if you see this and the first thing that pops into your head it “but Black men could vote before women,” you have a lot of work to do.

  1. No matter who we are, we should respect everyone and fight for everyone’s rights. We can’t separate racism from sexism from discrimination due to sexual orientation or identity. It’s all intertwined. We all face different struggles – I know I’ve been held back for being born a woman but I also know I’ve been “pushed forward” for being white. It’s not something to feel guilty about, it’s just important for me and everyone else to look at those two situations and see the same thing: injustice and discrimination. I’m aware of my privileges and I fight so that they’ll stop being privileges and start being something we can all expect, no matter our gender, the color of our skin, our culture, our sexual orientation, our gender identity and everything in between.
